Some people have been preparing for this solar phenomenon for years now, because it is the first eclipse to cross the entire continental United States in almost a century. The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or hand-held solar viewers.

It’s important to note that Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun directly. You are going to need certified eclipse glasses, lens filters and handheld solar viewer that meets the ISO 12312-2 international standard for safe watching.
