The NvidiaShield TV console is one of the most advanced feature rich set top box on the market right now, and one the most promising gaming system too.

It's able to deliver stunning 4K content to your living room TV without breaking a sweat, it can also stream gameplay on Twitch, making it the first media streaming device capable of real live broadcasting.

The Shield is capable of delivering incredible 4K UHDresolution Video via your favorite apps like Netflix, YouTube, KODI (XBMC), and PLEX and now Amazon Video, With Vivid 10-bit color and rich Dolby 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound pass through over HDMI. It also supports high-res audio playback up to 24-bit/192 kHz over HDMI and USB, with high-res audio up-sample to 24-bit/192 hHz over USB which makes this a true home theater experience like no other.

Dolby digital 7.1 surround sound

The rear IO has plenty of ports: Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.0, Two USB 3.0 (Type A) ports, micro USB 2.0 and a microSD card slot.

But unfortunately for those of us who like to use our Soundbars or even a more elaborate 7.1 speaker system in order to fully enjoy the rich immersive Dolby digital surround sound there is no optical audio out port on the shield TV console.

It makes you wonder who would design and create this ultra-powerful device and then not give you the ability to take full advantage of its awesome powers.

Luckily there is a work around that work like a boss, you can now turn one of the USB port on the back of the device with the addition of the Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro II USB Analog &DigitalAudio Adapter into an optical audio out port or a 3.5 mm Jack allowing you to connect any speaker system that you so choose.

  1. Why not just run the shield through my high end 7.2 supporting receiver via HDMI which pipes everything out to the speakers... ? I mean, I'm new to high end A/V systems, but I thought this is how it was supposed to work. If not, please let me know, and why, and how to better run my system.

    1. Hi Anthony you are right, that would be a better way to get that Dolby and DTS sound but a vast majority of Sheild TV owners don't have AV system setup in their homes, so they are either using s sound bar or some other device and this is just another option for them until they can get a setup like yours.

    2. If I use this setup will Netflix output Dolby digital to a sound bar ? Netflix uses Dolby digital+ so I would like to know if it works properly.
